On March 4th, something very exciting happened at Marlborough Primary School: World book Week! This was a fun-filled week jam-packed with many exciting activities for all children and staff to promote the love of reading. Children had the opportunity to read with other children from different year groups, took part in dance workshops based on Charlie and the chocolate factory, got to dress up as their favourite character from a book and enjoyed a cozy afternoon in their pjs reading their favourite book with a cup of hot chocolate.

Thank you to all the parents who also came in on the Friday afternoon to read with their children - they loved having you the opportunity to read with you!

The staff at Marlborough also surprised all the children by dressing up as the grandparents from Charlie and the chocolate factory whilst Mrs Byron and Mrs Robinson-Jones came dressed as Oompa Loompas and Mr Boyle and Mr White came dressed as Willy Wonka! This was indeed a sight to see!

"This week helped me improve my reading by giving me the chance to read books with lots of detail and imagination put into them."

"When we were reading and drinking hot chocolate with a delicious chocolate bar, my mind was relaxed and I was comfortable and I enjoyed reading my book with peace around me. I could understand the book and knew what I was reading."

"We had fun writing about the different things we made, like instructions for chocolate rice crispy cakes."

This week also gave children the chance to develop their writing skills as we all wrote instructions relating to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Here is some of Year 5 instructions on how to survive Willy Wonka's Factory...

How to survive in Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory:

Are you about to enter the huge Chocolate Factory with a golden ticket? Read on for some advice on how to stay safe!

Equipment:

  • The great golden ticket which you will need for entry.

  • Listening ears.

  • Common sense.

  • An adult.

Method

1) Firstly, make sure you arrive early (Mr Wonka does not allow late comers).

2) Ensure you bring your ticket otherwise you will not be permitted to enter. Present your ticket to the security guard in order to proceed.

3) Be certain to follow every single instruction Mr Wonka gives you himself. Listen carefully and cautiously and stay close to the rest of the people in your group.

4) When you start venturing into the factory, it is most likely you will first come to a vast room: the chocolate room! Inside you will see a flowing chocolate river which is near a brown waterfall. Under no circumstance should you drink from the river as there is a high probability you could fall in and this would be extremely bad. This is because falling in will result in you being sucked up by a lengthy vacuum pipe.

5) Eventually, the party (led by Willy Wonka) will continue into a highly-secured room called the Inventing Room. This room is very important so be warned - do not eat anything from this room without permission. If you do, you may be unfurtinate enough to be inflated like a balloon or even worse, you will have to end your tour of the factory...

We hope you enjoyed World Book Week as much as us!
